Cooking with Coconut Oil is not a Fad
Coconut Oil is not a fad, it’s a long term health solution
They say bodies are built in the kitchen and that’s probably true otherwise we wouldn’t spend so much time and effort trying to get the perfect diet that is going to make us slim and keep our families healthy. I think we all feel on an endless quest to find that simple, no fuss, cost effective, solution that not only everyone in our home likes, but is easy enough to maintain and becomes a new normal.
But all too often, the latest ‘big thing in healthy and nutrition’ is something that is hard to source, expensive, difficult to use and the family goes ‘eurgh what’s this?’ You yell back ‘eat it, it’s good for you’ before you know it the kids/partner/you have a full blown tantrum and dinner ends up in the bin. You are trying to do good but it is so stressful and overwhelming you ultimately resort to your usual diet.
I know. I’ve been there. Which is why I’m really excited to share with you a way to make all your meals healthier for little money and fuss.
How would you like something that is so good for you Dr Oz (who is a Cardiologist don’t forget) puts it on his family’s toast? Something that will not only look after your family’s health but will help you lose weight, give you a gorgeous healthy glow and make you look younger.
If this sounds good, then you may find coconut oil is the perfect solution for you. Here’s why.
Since the 60s we have been told fats are bad, stay away from fats and we’ve all listened, followed the advice and stuck to low fat alternatives. Therefore obesity should be eradicated and heart disease a thing of the past, right? So why is it that obesity is epidemic and heart disease is a bigger problems now than ever before? Surely by avoiding fats we should be healthier? What has gone so badly wrong?
The big mistake we made was thinking all fats are created equally, especially when it comes to saturated fats. We would be hesitant to feed an infant a product that was over half saturated fat but breast milk, the healthiest most nutritious substance we imagine, is 54% saturated fat. Fats are not all bad. Our brains are 60% fat. We need to change our thinking about fats if we want to improve our health, well-being and longevity.
This is the reason why scientists are getting so excited about coconut oil. It is a saturated fat that just like breast milk is abundant in lauric acid, a type of saturated fatty acid that boosts immunity and increases the amount of healthy cholesterol (HDL) in your body protecting you from heart disease. And that is of course on top of the well-known beauty and weight loss benefits of coconut oil.
But why would you use coconut oil to cook? Surely olive oil is the best? Olive oil is wonderful and I have it on salads all the time, but I never heat it. Olive oil is fragile. It’s starts to break down at about 160°C/325°F. When oils break down they release carcinogenic materials which encourage free radicals in our systems, which can lead to cancers. Whereas coconut oil can be heated to 177°C/350°F making it even suitable for deep frying. Burning your oil causes a foul taste and a load of chemical nasties, but using coconut oil for cooking will mean you are much less likely accidentally overheat your oil so it will always be a better choice for you to make.
I have yet to meet someone who has tried coconut oil and hasn’t fallen in love with it. By simply changing all your cooking oils to coconut oil, you will be giving yourself and your family a tremendous boost to your health. It is the easiest way to enrich your meals and it won’t cause any kitchen dramas from fussy eaters. It is exactly what busy parents want. And it is currently on sale! Buy now!
Coconut oil is the main cooking oil in coconut growing countries such as The Philippines. If coconut oil was bad for you, then we should see some very sick people in populations that eat it in abundance. But we don’t. Populations who eat a large percentage of calories from coconuts are statistically healthier than many Western nations. Studies on the largest consumers of saturated fats, the South Pacific Islanders, have found that generally people had no traces of cardiovascular disease and were overall in exceptional health. In this study, certain populations got most of their fats from coconuts and were in great health. Compare that to the general population of the USA, UK or Australia where we are highly educated on health and nutrition and have access to pretty much any health food we want, yet suffer terrible diseases as the result of poor diets.
Our attitude towards saturated fats has been a contributor to poor health and obesity. Thankfully, science has woken up to this which is why we are seeing more and more research looking into the ways saturated fats, and in particular coconut oil, can help address the health issues experienced by so many of us living in parts of the world with high levels of heart and obesity related death. The most recent research has shown that not all saturated fats are bad for your health and coconut oil is indeed one of these good fats.
What makes coconut oil so different is its molecular structure. Coconut oil consists almost entirely of Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) which gets fitness fanatics very excited as these are the special fatty acids that go straight to the liver where they are turned into ketones providing the body a quick source of energy. Many athletes now incorporate coconut oil into their nutrition plans because of this. MCTs are also coveted by people trying to lose weight as they boost metabolism, increasing your fat burning rate, which is why coconut oil is referred to the fat you eat to lose fat. Not only that, consuming coconut oil makes you feel fuller meaning you less likely to snack on unhealthy treats and your kids are less likely to complain about being hungry 5 minutes after they’ve finished their dinner – you know what I mean!
The abundance of lauric acid in coconut oil, the substance also abundant in breast milk, gives your body an immunity boost due to its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-carcinogenic and anti-inflammatory properties meaning it has many health applications. Not only is it great for fighting infections but it can help alleviate many other common conditions. It is a natural acne treatment that actually works. It has no impact on insulin production making it a good choice for people with diabetes. Coconut oil has been shown to be effective for some people managing thyroid and metabolic disorders. People with epilepsy on ketogenic diets often use coconut oil to produce ketones which can provide energy for the brain. There are so many ways coconut oil can help manage conditions and improve health.
But what about heart health? One of the biggest causes of heart disease is high cholesterol. Coconut oil is a saturated fat that increases cholesterol so shouldn’t we avoid it? The answer is no and to understand why you need to understand cholesterol. There are two types of cholesterol, High Density Lipoproteins (HDL) and Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL). Think of HDL cholesterol as Healthy cholesterol and LDL cholesterol as Lousy cholesterol. Lousy cholesterol sticks to the inner walls of arteries and can lead to heart attacks whereas the Healthy cholesterol does just the opposite and clears it away, like a snow plough, allowing a clear pathway for the blood to deliver nutrients around the body. To maintain good heart health you want to increase the amount of Healthy cholesterol and reduce the amount of Lousy cholesterol. Guess what, studies prove virgin coconut oil significantly reduces LDL cholesterol and increases HDL cholesterol. And if that’s not enough for you it also has positive effects on blood coagulation factors, antioxidant status and helps shift adipose tissue (belly fat) from around the organs reducing the risk of disease (and the size of your waist!)
So back to the ole problem. If coconut oil is so good then it must be really expensive, hard to source, difficult to use and taste disgusting. Wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong again. It’s relatively cheap, you buy it at the supermarket or online (click here), you just use it as your cooking oil and it tastes delicious.
When purchasing coconut oil only ever buy organic extra virgin/virgin coconut oil. Anything other than that is refined and will not give you the same benefits. Most supermarkets and health food shops stock coconut oil as it is in such high demand. We also recommend online coconut oil vendors on this website so you can be confident you are purchasing the correct type of coconut oil and not the stuff that has been processed or had all the nutrients bleached out of it.
The easiest way to incorporate coconut oil into your diet is just to replace all your cooking oils with coconut oil – simple. Due to its high saturated fat content, coconut oil can be heated to frying temperatures and retain its nutritional value. Coconut oil retains its nutritional benefits, even at high temperatures giving it the edge over olive oil in terms of cooking. Coconut oil is a stable oil which makes it an excellent choice for frying.
But won’t everything taste like coconut? No. Most of the flavor of coconut oil is lost during cooking so it shouldn’t alter the taste of your favorite dishes. You can cook anything in coconut oil and 9/10 it will taste exactly the same as if you used your current cooking oil. And even if things taste a bit different, it will be a taste of coconut – which is delicious! The thing to remember is that using coconut oil instead of butter on your toast or to saute vegetables is not only delicious, but much, much better for you. You can have a massive impact on the health and wellbeing of your family and they won’t even notice you’ve altered their food in anyway – meaning less hassle for you.
When I first started cooking with coconut oil I was a bit apprehensive that everything would taste like coconut oil so I tended just to use it for things like Thai curries. One day I went to cook steaks and found I was out of veg cooking oil so had no option other than to use coconut oil. I put down the plates and just waited for the complaints that the steak tasted funny but to my surprise nothing was said. Eating the steak myself I was aware that it was cooked in coconut oil but was not really able to pick out the taste. For the next few days I used it in a variety of different dishes; fried fish, chicken alfredo, roast lamb, and still no-one had noticed. It wasn’t until I next made steaks using ordinary vegetable oil that the complaints started but to my shock it was ‘this isn’t as nice as the last steaks your made’. Now everything is cooked in coconut oil.
There is no difference between coconut oil used for cooking and coconut oil used for beauty products but you might want to use separate jars. Just about every room in our house now has a jar of coconut in it! We will always recommend you buy virgin or extra virgin, organic, raw, cold pressed coconut oil and always try to get Fairtrade where available. Unlike with olive oil there is no difference between virgin and extra virgin coconut oil but you MUST ensure the coconut oil you buy is unrefined – that is the important part. Refined coconut oils have been made using chemical processes such as bleaching which inevitable means it loses its goodness. Buying from our site ensures that you getting a great price and that you will get the right kind of coconut that is going to give you so many great benefits.
Do not be afraid! Be like Dr Oz and get that delicious texture of buttered toast with coconut oil. Using coconut oil on your toast may seem strange at first but before long you will wonder how you ever lived without it. Not only are you getting that mouth-watering texture but also a lovely subtle coconut flavor that will give you an instant energy boost to kick start your day. Eating saturated fat feels counter-intuitive, but studies are showing that our lack of understanding of fats has actually made us sicker. Not all fats are the same. Coconut oil is made from medium chain fatty acids which have great health benefits for weight loss and heart health. It boosts immunity and helps manage a variety of medical conditions due to it’s high lauric acid content, a fatty acid found in breast milk. It’s such a simple solution to such a big problem that the only regret you’ll have is that you didn’t discover it sooner.
When someone in my home had a cold or sore throat I would usually swear by a soothing cup of green tea, lemon and honey to help them to feel better. Since discovering coconut oil I have been adding a spoonful into the tea and have to say it does help clear up throat infections faster and makes the patient feel a bit sprightlier. It’s a much better alternative to those painkillers with caffeine. It’s 100% natural and you can give it to children. I have to say in my experience, it does the job.
We only recommend organic virgin or extra virgin coconut oil on our site. Organic coconut oil will be of better quality than non-organic oil and subsequently be better for you. Similarly, organic coconut oil will mean that your oil will be free of pesticides and other chemicals that are used in intensive farming practices. Raw and cold pressed refers to the method of coconut oil extraction. You want a coconut oil that has been extracted using a controlled temperature so not to damage the health properties associated with this wonder oil. By purchasing coconut oil from our site you can be assured you will be getting the correct product as we only recommend organic extra virgin/virgin coconut oils.

I did. But even if it is only a current western fad, it’s one that has been getting people across the globe results for centuries. Whilst big companies have been making a fortune selling you low fat products that don’t work, Pacific Islanders have been using coconut oil, as they have always done, and have healthy hearts as a result.
