How can eating fat help me to lose weight?
It seems counter-intuitive that eating fat can help you lose weight. But even Dr Oz describes coconut oil as the fat you eat to get rid of fat. For so many years the message has been that fat is bad and a low fat diet is the only way to lose weight. Yet despite our obsession with low fat diets, obesity levels have risen to epidemic proportions. Studies are now beginning to show that sugar, and in particular refined carbohydrates, are the real villains in the battle against the bulge.
The truth seems to be that refined foods that are at the root of many of the western world’s health problems, usually in the form of a combination of trans fats and refined carbohydrates – that’s the magic combination that keeps people going back again and again for more of the stuff.
A diet that consists of whole foods, real foods, foods that grow and are not made in factories by a team of scientists, tend to lead to bodies that are leaner, healthier and happier. Natural foods, especially organic foods, will not disrupt your body in the same way as a packaged, long life, ‘diet food’ that has a list of ingredients you cannot even pronounce, nevermind understand what they are and what they are doing to your body.
An average salmon fillet can contain 15g of fat but it is so, so, so much better for you than a ‘diet friendly’, fat free, ready meal. Your body needs fats to thrive but you have to be sensible about where you are getting them from. An oily salmon fillet contains fats, essential fats, which are very different to those found in a burger.
We know that olive oil is good for you because it is an unsaturated fat, meaning it doesn’t turn solid at room temperature or cause clogged arteries. But coconut oil is a saturated fat so how can it be good for you and also help you lose weight?

The body uses coconut oil in a different way to other fats. Rather than storing the fat from coconut oil, the body sends it straight to the liver for instant energy. Using coconut oil to help you lose weight is great due to the fact it speeds up your metabolism increasing your fat burn. However, that doesn’t mean you should sit down and eat a jar of the wonder stuff – not that you could anyway. About two tablespoons throughout your day should do the job.
Another benefit of including fat in your diet is that it leaves you feeling full-up. It sends a message to the brain saying ‘we have enough calories here so stop shoveling more food in!’ You then get a nice content feeling and are less likely to go raiding the cupboards an hour later looking for snacks.Coconut oil is high in fat therefore it is calorie-dense. One tablespoon can contain 117 calories so make sure you are taking that into consideration when you are monitoring your calories in vs calories out.
