The best coconut oil will be virgin or extra virgin (there’s no difference), organic, raw, cold pressed and always try to get fair trade.
Unlike with olive oil there is no difference between virgin and extra virgin coconut oil. The point is that by ensuring it is one of these, you can be sure that your coconut oil is unrefined. That is the important part.
Refined coconut oil have been made using all kinds of chemical processes such as bleaching which inevitable means it loses its goodness. Refined coconut oil comes from dried coconut called copra whereas unrefined (virgin or extra virgin) is derived from fresh coconuts and has not gone under any chemical processing.
Similarly, organic coconut oil will mean that your oil will be free of pesticides and other chemicals that are used in intensive farming practices. Organic coconut oil will be of better quality than non-organic oil and subsequently be better for you.
Raw and cold pressed refers to the method of coconut oil extraction. You want a coconut oil that have been extracted using a controlled temperature so not to damage the health properties associated with this wonder oil.
Fair Trade means that the farmers get a fairer price for their product. Paying the farmers a decent and fair price for their product is not only the right thing to do but it means that the farmers have the money to invest in producing a better product that you will eventually consume. So please buy Fair trade whenever you can.
